ABOUT THE SS THISTLEGORM:
Special program to the wreck of the SS Thistlegorm
The SS-Thistlegorm was a British Navy Boat built in 1940. Her 4th and last journey started in May 1941 in Glasgow, Scottland. She headed towards Alexandria in Egypt taking much needed supplies to the British 8th Army.

The vessel was transporting ammunition, truks, motorbikes, steam locomotives, covers for airplane engines and more. In the early hours of the 6th of October 1941she was attacked by two German Heinkel HE 111 bombers dropping two 2 ton bombs on her fourth hold near the engine room, where the ammunition was stored.
The explosion was powerful violent, exploding most of the munitions on board and one of the ship boilers. Having been split in two, the Thistlegorm sank on the floor, finally coming to rest upright and with the exception of the stern portion on an even keel.

In Shaa`b Ali Area at a depth of 30 metres Jacques-Yves discovered the wreck first in 1955. With the first underwater movie camera he documented the amazing discovery. These scenes would later appear in the famous documentary „le monde du silence“ and a long article in the National Geographic was printed in 1956 which made the Thistlegorm an item of wonder before again passing in to obscurity.
The wreck was rediscovered in the 70`s and was kept a secret dive site until the early 90`s. Due to publications in the british „diver“ and italian „Aqva“ magazine  the SS Thistlegorm rapidly became one of the most famous and sought after wrecks in the world.
