Facts and not rumors
Interim report on the events in El Quseir at the Red Sea in Egypt
Currently (as at 16. April 2013)
The illegal action, starting on Thursday 4th April 2013, in which our employees were prevented from entering our dive center in Radisson Blu Resort in El Quseir, is still persisting.
Since 13 days, the local police and Authority is standing idly by.
This is not because the head of the illegal action, Yasser El Thoky, is their friend. The opposite is the case. The local police has told us: “We hate this guy!”
They still do nothing, because of their concern, that Yasser El Tokhy and his entourage of 10 to 15 people could start to riot in front of the police station.
Our charge at the tourist police on the 4th April has been passed to the therefore responsible local police authority on the 7th April. The police has transferred this file to the court in El Quseir.
To date, the responsible public prosecutor has not yet processed the case.
Only when the public prosecutor gives the command to the local police to proceed against this illegal action, action will take place.
In addition, we deposited a report with the internal investigative service of the Red Sea district. This is against the responsible police officer from South Red Sea, which so far has done nothing.
We are unable to estimate the time it will take until the Court accepts the case.
Background
For such occurrences it is only “normal” that the grapevine is bubbling. But rumors don’t show the facts and circumstances. To prevent at least a little, it seems appropriate to show the background and facts.
As everywhere in civilized countries, there is also a labor law in Egypt.
Fact is, that all of our employees have an employment contract which is deposited on the social security office, just like the labor law requires it.
In the case of the employees in El Quseir, compliant with the Egyptian labor law, we have fixed-term contracts with a duration of 12 months.These contracts expired on 31st March 2013.
For four of the 17 Egyptian employees we have not offered a new contract, due to poor performance at work. The four employees have been informed in good time before the expiry orally and in writing.
As former personnel manager for SUBEX, Yasser El Tokhy was already informed in fall 2012, that he will be removed from his function in El Quseir by end of December 2012. The reason was his poor performance at work and the misdemeanor against the company.
With the annulment of his function in El Quseir a deadline of 3 months has been given by the employer, although the labor law requires only 15 days.
Since Yasser and the four employees do not want to accept our decision, which according to the labor law has been carried out correctly, now are holding this illegal act in order to damage the company and to press money which is not entitled to them.
They know the current political situation in Egypt, as well as the local conditions of the police authorities in El Quseir and use it for their illegal action.
Then there is also the social responsibility of the employer to its employees. This is not written in any statutory regulation, but only and alone the deeds and actions of the employer with its respect to its employees.
Although since the so-called Arab spring in January 2011, the tourism has fallen off and is only very slowly recovering, SUBEX did not dismiss any of its employees on all 5 diving centers for too little work or economic reasons.
The opposite is the case. Now, since about two years, in which no tourism business makes a lot of money and profit, we stand behind our 70 employees. We left none in unpaid leave and we paid the full salary on time to the end of the month. Our employees receive in addition, daily meals, working clothes and if they do not live at home with their families, we provide accommodation and travel money for visiting their families regularly. All employees have their claim of more than 90 days per year free paid vacation and statutory holidays. Even for the Ramadan (in Europe comparing to Christmas) the company paid a small bonus to each of them.
Because the company was not able to earn profit in the past two years, the costs incurred by the employees has been settled from “pocket” of the three owners of SUBEX.
The events of the last 2 weeks in El Quseir are painful and hurt. Also a few querulous persons as Yasser El Tokhy and his small entourage cannot deter us from continue to stand behind the people here in Egypt to 100%.
At this point, last but not least, a sincere thank you to all, guests, employees, travel agents and companions who are there for us in this difficult time.

1. report: Scuba diving service in El Quseir set until further notice
Since last Thursday, the 4th of april 2013, a group of former employees, under the leadership of the former Egyptian Personnel Manager Yasser El Tokhy, are blocking access for our staff into the Radisson Blu Resort El Quseir. The goal of their illegal blockade is, to prevent our staff to get to their place of work.
The reason for this action is to extort money from SUBEX Branch Egypt.
This group uses the current political situation in Egypt, because they know that the authorities and the police is not going against demonstrators.
Several attempts by our general manager, Johann Vifian and our lawyer, to settle the matter in discussions have so far proved unsuccessful.
The responsible police officer of the South Red Sea, even after personal threats of physical violence towards our employees and obvious offenses by the blockers, is not willing to proceed against the illegal blockade.
Our lawyers and we will continue to give everything we can to stop this illegal act and to ensure that the perpetrators will be punished.
Because of the reason that our entry to the diving center is denied for days already, we are forced to cease the diving operations.
What Yasser El Tokhy and its small entourage is doing with this illegal action is exactly what the already battered Egypt needs at the least. They destroy and imperil jobs in the tourism, which they obviously take for purely selfish reasons. The hope stays, that the tourism ministry and the head of the police department Red Sea will get this information and puts an end to this.
We would like to thank our entire team in El Quseir for which the situation also is not easy to deal with.
We apologize for any inconvenience to all our guests. In particular to those which have found the diving center empty in the past couple of days. As far as it was possible for us, we tried to provide the guests to go diving with another diving center.
With all those, who have already booked in the future, we will get in contact as soon as possible to find a fast and unbureaucratic solution.

The German 3D camera crew from HGTV (www.hgvt.de) has produced, with the support of SUBEX, a 3D underwater film.
In this film the new 3D camera from Panasonic HDC-Z10000 and a new built underwater housing from BS Kinetics were used.
The content of this film is around 15 hours of footage recorded on the excellent dive sites around Hurghada, which were cut and produced to a 49 minutes sensational film. This shows the amazing underwater world around Hurghada and impressively proves that these are still one of the best diving areas in the world.
This unique underwater film will be shown at the 09. May 2013 as a premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival in Munich. More info on this you find here under www. dokfest-muenchen.de.

Destination Dahab - Camel Safari to Ras Abu Galloum
Even if it rocks a little, the view of the countryside along the coast on the back of a camel is worth the experience. The destination is Abu Galloum one of the most pristine dive sites in the north of Dahab. On land there are small Bedouin villages where you can find, between the dives, time for tea and a great buffet.
Meeting point is at the base at 6:30. Then we drive with the bus and your diving equipment to the Blue Hole. The camels waiting there for us at 7 o'clock. After the arrival our guides load the rice bags with our luggage and it's time for a little tea and breakfast.
After 2 hours on the camels we reach the beautiful bay of Ras Abu Galloum. And than it is time to go into the water.

Meeting point is in our SUBEX base in Dahab at 6:30.
The ride on the camel takes about 2 hours.
About 5 o'clock we are back in the Dahab base.

Destination Dahab - Nuweiba
Sometimes less is more. Nuweiba can not offers a great variety of dive sites, but the one it has they are amazing. Right next to the Hilton Hotel extends a beautiful sandy beach with easy entry and a huge sea grass. You can find there colorful nudibranchs and seahorses.
Those who prefer reef has a few minutes further coral blocs which build one big coral tower. In all of the blocs you can find an incredibly life variety. 1000e various shrimp, numerous moray eels, scorpion fish, stone fish, various tiger fish species and on the big bloc a large black frogfish.
Just 300 meters away is another dive site, the pipelines. It is a disused water maker, whose relics lead to a depth of twenty feet into the sea. Meanwhile, they are covered with beautiful corals and are home to a stunning variety of species.
If you have enough of the pipelines just dive 5 minutes further north and you will find seagrass with a small reef inhabited by numerous aquatic creatures.
Finally, there is a great BBQ with view of the sea and once again the chance to watch the 3 green turtles in 3 meters depth with the snorkel equipment. In this place there is also a small reef.

Once again throughout the help of the social network FACEBOOK a "mess" was uncovered and made public. On the SUBEX owned fan page SUBEX - THE ART OF DIVING a report according to the subject of abuse by sharks in Sharm El Sheikh was posted by one of its members. SUBEX forwarded the article along with pictures to HEPCA (Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association) with a request to pursue this matter further in the future to prevent such occurrences. After several interventions and efforts the following was achieved and published via news:

What is really meant by repdigit?! Here's a definition: A repdigit is a multi-digit number which is exclusively represented by identical digits.
Since years people use these repdigit dates for special occasions. Thus clinics prepared themselfs today to do more caesarean sections, the "tailor" birthdates.
But far more often such a date is used to get married. If these marriage last longer is speculation. However an evaluation has shown that these marriages on such a special day do not last longer.
To not have to wait 89 years, there are a number of special events that are closer: Alone in the coming year offers on the 11.12.2013 and 13.09.2013 and the 13.12.2013, because both are a Friday.

BOOT 2012 - Retrospection to a successful event and the work of a grandiose fair team

After all of the Subex staff had arrived, we - full of rosy expectations - were heading for diving sports hall N°3. How does the workplace for nine days look like? Everybody was impressed by the clearly, vividly and informatively arranged stand. At the second stand big pictures - one of model Vreni and one of model longnose hawkfish - decorated as well the meters high walls. The fair team consisted of: Alex, Ayman, Chris, Doris, Johann, Piesi, Steffi, Steffeli, and Verena. At the SUBEX stand the guests were informed about the SUBEX features SUBEX air28, no stupid limits, Welcome Dive, One for Four, the member system, FEEL THE DIVE and FUN diver. On Sunday, Wednesday at the stand party and Saturday there was a highlight for the visitors: SUBEX rocked together with the Blues Brothers. With their moves and their rhythms the excellent singer Harald and the ex base manager Michael (Latschi) Latschenberger of EL Quseir made the hall shake, rattle and roll. Thanks to the preparation, the idea of the Blues Brothers’ gig and the presentation of the SUBEX features and first of all thanks to the grandiose team BOOT 2012 was a complete success. Both SUBEX stands were permanently enjoying visitors, all presents were handed over and the mood for diving in the beautiful host country Egypt had been reawaken in a lot of people. Now, all the bookings will follow soon - hopefully!

SUBEX is setting new standards! At its booth 3F59 at the 2012 BOOT show, SUBEX will uniquely present "NO STUPID LIMITS." With blues and bouncing knees, with hats and sunglasses. Yeah, right! As legendary as the Blues Brothers are in the movie industry, so is SUBEX in the diving industry So, not only will theoretical issues be discussed, but there will also be lots of partying! On stage, at the SUBEX party on Wednesday , and more.
Together with the VDST stand 3B53, the SUBEX stand is all about education. Whether for diving novices or aspiring pros, all training programs from the SUBEX FUN Diver up to Dive Leader and instructors will be presented. One focus is on taking care of one to three-star VDST instructors. SUBEX, as a ***** VDST dive center, offers to prospective teachers the possibility of field experience and exam preparation. The content of the programs are presented, discussed with the candidates, and applicants are accepted.
For all SUBEX members, the good news is that the popular "members recruit guests' action is extended, and anyone who has ever dived with SUBEX and recruits a new guest can continue his diving dive package at a discount of 50%.

The team at SUBEX consists of Steffi from Sharm, managing director Johann, Steffi from marketing, Ayman from El Quseir and Doris of Marsa Alam. Also contributing to the Subex booth are other friendly helpers: the former, longtime SUBEX employee Alex, Chris and Andu, as well as SUBEX member Martina, who has already dived all SUBEX bases and knows the guests very well. Piesi from El Quseir and Verena from SUBEX headquarters are available at the VDST stand to answer questions.to all those interested in training.

SUBEX Diving Center Marsa Imbarak Update
Subex Sharm El Sheikh is 20 years!
On September 5, 2011, SUBEX Sharm El Sheikh celebrates its 20th anniversary!
The second SUBEX dive center in the Red Sea was SUBEX Sharm and opened six years after the "mother" dive center in Hurghada. They welcomed avid divers and snorkelers and brought them to the best diving and snorkeling sites around Sharm El Sheikh.
When the SUBEX dive center in Sharm was still in its infancy, it looked quite different: Na'ama Bay was largely undeveloped and we took a jeep to explore the dive sites. Today, twenty years later, SUBEX dive center is represented in Sharm at three different locations, and guests are accommodated with comfortable mini buses to the diving excursions. Boat dives from the dive center boat "Beirut" are very popular. The daily rotation of dive sites includes the famous Ras Mohamed National Park, the popular Straits of Tiran and cozy local dive spots. The program is rounded out with special trips to the legendary wreck of the SS Thistlegorm, the famous Blue Hole, and the spectacular Canyon (both in Dahab). One of the most sought-after special trips is a visit to Ras Mohamed National Park from the shore as part of the "Ras Mohamed Relaxing Day". Pioneer spirit and joy for the underwater world led to the success of the company and laid the foundation for their other dive centers in El Quseir, Marsa Alam and Dahab.

Base manager Changements in El Quseir
After a half year of project work for SUBEX, Steph and Piesi dive back into management in with guest service and everyday business operations. Piesi has been with SUBEX since 2005 and most recently led the SUBEX team in El Quseir, El Quadim Bay for two years. He is looking forward now to the very new, old job. He brings 18 years experience as an instructor and instructor trainer. His partner Steph began her first diving business career in 2008 as a counter/Reservations employee, and then took over project management duties for SUBEX El Quadim Bay and all five SUBEX dive centers on the Red Sea. The project work continues, and only better prepares her for dive center manager tasks. The couple brings joy to the job, providing extensive knowledge and experience to the known and new SUBEX guests as their main goals.
Simone Siegenthaler and Doris Kupferschmied, the female leaders since opening the dive center in April 2010, both will change internally in the company. For their involvement in the construction phrase, the company gives a big thank you. They pass on a very well-running dive operation and happy guests.

Change of management at the base in Sharm el-Sheikh
Last year Simone and Doris Kupferschmied successfully opened and ran the SUBEX base at the Radisson in El Quseir. Her life partner Hannes, ran a small resort with 70 rooms in El Quseir. So both are extremely well qualified for their new task and are looking forward tremendously to taking up their new duties in Sharm on 1 August 2011.
We wish them and the whole team in Sharm el-Sheikh every success.
Gil Finckler, who successfully ran our base in Sharm for two (not always easy) years, has decided to take on some fresh challenges, selling, running and leading special programs in the Sinai. We would like to thank him for all he achieved as base manager and wish him a happy and prosperous future with his new activities.

After 11 years of reliable, continuous cooperation, the faithful old home page was replaced with a new one: It should be visually beautiful, as well as clearer. We wanted to provide more available details for our guests and users of the site. More space for Stories, News, Messages, for weekly thoughts with the View through the Mask, place for Underwater Galleries, Dive Site Maps, Pictures of our Dive Centers--the new site should provide all of these, and a portion of it should be interactive.
Therefore, our programmer Pius worked for months with the marketing department of SUBEX, and piece by piece the SUBEX website took on a new form. Then, when the test phase was complete, it was declared on June 16, 2010, "Please switch off the old home page and upload the new one,“ knowing well that in the next few weeks, the little errors which had been overlooked despite careful accuracy and proofreading, must be gradually corrected.
And we had great help: We called the consumers to our website to inform us of their opinions, and to enlighten us about the performance of functions and any slight errors. We wanted to know what our guests like, what appeals to them, and where we can still make improvements.
As a reward, we were giving away 3 x 2 10 dive packages to the respondents.
We ended the test phase as planned, after a good half year, in December 2010, and took stock: We received a total of 24 reviews. Starting from the hint that a link was not yet working correctly, to page-long suggestions, like how to rank the home page better on Google, or how to visually simplify the site. In collaboration with the users of the site, we can constantly improve. For example, a Skip Intro button has been added, we have expanded the photo galleries, and videos are now linked to youtube.
Thanks to all who participated: Mission accomplished!

Member Harald Ecker West is delighted to make his wife Elke and daughter Annika divers in 2011 with a SUBEX holiday. Actually, the vacation plans for this year were different. By winning, however, the wishes of the family have spontaneously "moved" back to El Quseir ... Shortly after the new site was uploaded, Harald pointed out that the link to El Quseir Charter did not work. Thank you and congratulations!
It’s lovely, too, that Goldmember Beate Seiler, who loves the underwater world, and especially the snails of the El Quadim Bay as a photographer, was pulled by Verena as the third winner. In her e-mail, Beate expressed that some of the selected photos were in need of improvement. Since the tip in July 2010, we have tripled the number of images in our galleries, and doubled the number in the texts. We also thank Beate for the comment and the link to her own really well done pictures. Congratulations!
25th anniversary of SUBEX in Hurghada
They all came, and from everywhere: Egyptian employees, as well as Europeans, the Jeep drivers, the boat captains, the dive center managers, the office mice, the tank fillers, the guides, the counter staff, the project officer, the instructor and management—by plane from Dahab and Sharm el Sheikh, by bus from El Quseir, and by taxis and motorcycle from the head office in Hurghada. 120 men and women who work with SUBEX in the Red Sea left the guest operation be guest operation for two half-days while they celebrated—and in the right place!
For the 25th anniversary of SUBEX Hurghada, there were several festivities in 2010:
The Dive Center Manager and Head Office staff were allowed to join Verena und Johann Vifian on September 6, 1985, as they arrived in Hurghada, to just go out on that day and enjoy the celebration, which was more of a private nature, with good food.
On December 26, 1985 the current manager and the personnel manager made the very first outing with guests to the offshore reefs in Hurghada. The 2nd Christmas Day, a quarter century ago, was also a wonderful time, and not too windy of a day, as Verena and Johann remember it.
The third and biggest event should take place on a date that is not already occupied by a holiday in SUBEX’s historic year of 2010—to be specific, on Decembet 11, 2010.

Th employees did not trickle in gradually. No. At the stroke of noon, 40 staff members from Sharm got off the plane and found their way to their hotels to make themselves fresh and pretty. In the afternoon came the second round: With two large buses, a 70-strong team of men and women arrived from El Quseir. The combined Eco-bay and safari-trip power from the south went straight to the locations of the events.
For the mega SUBEX event, Bordiehns Restaurant was exactly the right choice of location. The traditional restaurant also celebrates its anniversary soon. For 20 years, the star chef Thomas has been conjuring delicious and unusual dishes for its guests in the city on the Red Sea. That evening he treated 120 SUBEX guests to Egyptian appetizers, soup, a choice of fish or meat with vegetables and rice, and strawberries and cream - or so plainly described by an amateur. A magician provoked stunned faces and loud laughter the entire evening.
There was not one particular highlight of the evening. There were two. 
Before the main course, when the stomachs were no longer growling and the first drinks had everyone amused, Johann invited the guests on a journey. For each year since 1985, he emphasized the most striking, lasting memories and milestones of SUBEX: The first outing, with guests signing the contract, SUBEX registered as the first Egyptian diving company, setting the first buoy, the founding of the now largest non-governmental organization HEPCA Egypt, establishing the base in Sharm, which provides the way for the next anniversary in 2011, when she is 20 years old next summer, and and and ... Participant giggled, learned, laughed and remembered. Many SUBEX employees have been employed for 17 years and are loyal to the company. For these and the other busy bees, managing director and owner Johann and his wife Verena wanted to do something good with a very special gift—the second highlight.
What does a manager give to his staff on the anniversary of the establishment? Preferably something that is of lasting significance, something in line with the corporate philosophy, and something each employee can identify with.
The announcement of the gift was met with enthusiasm. Everyone wanted to sign first. Above all, the Egyptians were happy about the gift to continue giving.
Of course we will talk to you later this year about the visits of children to Hurghada! 
It was nearly midnight when the rewarding night ended. Full and satisfied, the men and women left either by bus to El Quseir, or to their rented hotels.
Everyone is looking forward to the 20-year anniversary of Sharm in 2011!
